  Los Angeles County is larger in population than 42 states in the U.S., with an annual budget of more than $15 billion. A civil service staff, composed of 36 County departments, serves the needs of the County's population of approximately 9.8 million people.

Property taxes are the principal source of local revenue available to the County to finance its operations. State and federal funds, grants, miscellaneous fines, fees, licenses, permits and taxes produce the additional revenue essential for the mandatory and nonmandatory functions of County government.
