The mission of Special Olympics is to provide sports training and competition
in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental
retardation. Developing the athletes' physical, social, psychological, intellectual
and spiritual qualities underlies everything that is done in Special Olympics.
The organization strives to integrate its ahtletes into society and promote
understanding and acceptance of people with mental retardation.
Southern California Special Olympics (SCSO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
providing a year-round program of sports training and competition for children
and adults with mental retardation.

SCSO is
a chapter of Special Olympics Internations, which oversees Special Olympics
programs in more than 143 countries, every state in the U.S. and 3 U.S.
territories. More than 13,000 athletes participate in Southern California
Special Olympics activities with the assistance and support of thousands

SCSO was established
in 1969 when Olympic gold medalist and current SCSO Board of Governors
Chairman Rafer Johnson hosted the first Summer Games. Since then
the program has expanded to enable athletes throughout the state to participate
year-round. Athletes can join Special Olympics at age five, compete at
age eight, and remain in the program throughout adulthood. SCSO
operates out of their headquarters located in Santa Monica.
